The Challenge

The onboard networks are set up redundantly, meaning a failure in one component won’t immediately bring down the entire system. Functional, but not without risk. 

If a component fails, the network continues to operate as normal. This creates a hidden vulnerability: when the backup fails too, the entire network goes down. The result? Significant financial impact and frustrated crew members who suddenly lose all connection with the outside world.

That’s why the client came to us with a clear request: they needed a solution that: 

• detects network issues early
• continues monitoring, even without connectivity
• provides real-time insights from one central location

The Solution: Canopy

For this situation, we implemented Canopy, Retigra’s observability solution. Each vessel now runs a local Canopy Branch Appliance that continuously collects metrics from the network components.

Even during temporary internet outages, the Branch securely stores data locally and transmits it once the connection is restored.

This ensures visibility into the infrastructure is always available, even with limited or no satellite connectivity. 

Canopy acts as a smart observability layer on top of a complex, distributed IT infrastructure.
